The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has announced that Professor Brendan Burkett, a renowned Paralympian and sport scientist, will be delivering a keynote address at the VISTA 2025 conference. This prestigious event, taking place in Cairo, Egypt, from December 7-10, 2025, under the theme 'Developing Para Sport: Inclusion, Transformation, Health and Performance', will feature Professor Burkett as one of its featured speakers.
Professor Burkett's unique contribution lies in his ability to merge his own Paralympic experience with scientific expertise. As a four-time Paralympian for Australia (1988-2000) in Para swimming, he achieved a remarkable collection of gold, silver, and bronze medals. His achievements also extended beyond the pool, as he served as the flagbearer during the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games.
Post-retirement from high-performance sports, Professor Burkett has dedicated his efforts to shaping Paralympic performance through science. He has integrated engineering principles with applied sport science, significantly enhancing the performance of Paralympic athletes. His extensive experience includes serving as a sport science coordinator and head coach across five Paralympic Games (2004-2021) and multiple World Championships.
In addition to his coaching roles, Professor Burkett has held leadership positions, including the role of Director of High-Performance Sport at the University of the Sunshine Coast. He currently chairs the Queensland Para Sport Network, which plays a crucial role in preparing for the Brisbane 2032 Paralympic Games.
Professor Burkett's keynote presentation, titled 'From Research to Reality: Measuring What We Can’t See', will delve into the ways in which science can uncover the unseen factors that influence performance and inclusion in Paralympic sports. Drawing from decades of research and collaboration, he will emphasize how innovation and curiosity continue to redefine ability, performance, and possibility.
Professor Burkett expressed his enthusiasm, stating, 'Scientific discovery is most powerful when it changes lives. The Paralympic Movement reminds us that research is not just about data — it’s about expanding human potential and redefining what’s possible.'
The VISTA Conference, first organized by the IPC in 1993, has evolved into a significant international scientific gathering that provides a platform for exchanging information, research, and expertise related to sports for individuals with disabilities. It initially aimed to address the limited scientific research on elite sports for athletes with impairments. Over time, it has become a key forum for exchanging expertise related to Para sports and the Paralympic Movement. Today, the conference also focuses on enhancing and promoting interaction among sport scientists, coaches, athletes, and sport administrators.
