Rugby Legend Alex Goode Makes Surprise Comeback with Rugby Lions (2025)

A true rugby legend, Alex Goode, has made a remarkable comeback to the sport, but this time for the Rugby Lions. Goode, a man known for his skills and love for the game, has always been a people's champion, and his recent return to the pitch is a testament to that.

With a career spanning years at the highest level, representing England and Saracens, Goode has experienced it all. From celebrating wins with a beer to legendary post-game benders, he's a true rugby enthusiast.

But here's where it gets interesting... Camden Town Brewery, in their quest to support grassroots rugby, approached Goode, the perfect ambassador, to join their initiative, 'Give 'Em Hells'.

As a part-time coach at Saracens, Goode's achievements speak for themselves: 400 appearances for the club and 21 caps for England. Yet, his love for rugby remained unwavering.

So, when Camden invited him to lace up his boots again, Goode accepted, eager to support the Rugby Lions RFC.

Camden, as the new sponsors, went all out for the Lions' first home game against Oundle 2s. Jim Hamilton and Andy Goode of The Rugby Pod were there, along with Scott Quinnell, a legend in his own right, who delivered an inspiring pre-match talk. Every fan received a free pint of Camden Hells, setting the tone for a memorable day.

Goode, expecting a casual game, arrived an hour early, only to realize the challenge ahead. Having faced top-tier teams and players, he soon understood the task at hand.

'It was eight leagues down, and I thought it would be easy. But our opponents were exceptional, having won matches by huge margins.'

Goode joined the game two minutes into the second half, with his team already trailing by a significant margin.

'I turned up, and they were already taping up. I thought, what have I walked into?'

Despite the odds, the Lions fought hard, and Goode's presence made a difference.

'People see me as a skilled player, but I've always been part of gritty teams. That's what I saw in the Rugby Lions. Even though we lost, we gave it our all.'

Goode, playing full-back, made his presence felt, despite the nerves.

'I didn't want to look like a fraud, but I also wanted to win. We scored two tries, which was a great achievement against such strong opposition.'

The Lions may have lost, but the experience was a memorable one. Scott Quinnell's post-match words, 'You're a Lion now, mate,' summed up the day.

Rugby Lions' history has had its ups and downs, especially financially. But with Camden's support, the club's spirits are high.

Goode's presence, along with the brewery's backing, made the Lions' clubhouse a vibrant place.

'My grassroots days at Cambridge RUFC came to mind. I had to down a pint of Hells as punishment for being late, but it was a great experience.'

Goode's impact on the Lions was evident, and his willingness to support the team is commendable.

'Rugby is all about the grassroots level. If I've helped the Lions, even in a small way, I'm happy.'

Could we see Goode make another comeback? He remains retired, but who knows what the future holds for this rugby legend.

What do you think? Could Goode's return inspire a new generation of rugby players? Share your thoughts in the comments!
