A recent report has sparked an intriguing debate within the cricket community. The future of Pakistan's women's cricket team hangs in the balance, and an unexpected candidate has stepped forward.
Former Pakistan pacer Wahab Riaz has expressed his desire to coach the women's team following their disappointing World Cup campaign. However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) seems to be considering other avenues, leaving Riaz's potential appointment as a backup plan.
The women's team, led by Fatima Sana, failed to win a single match at the World Cup, resulting in the non-renewal of head coach Muhammad Wasim's contract. According to a PTI report, the PCB is still undecided about their next move.
But here's where it gets controversial: the PCB has issued a rebuttal to the reports of Riaz being considered for the head coach role. Instead, they've initiated negotiations with two foreign coaches to work with the women's team. If those talks don't bear fruit, the PCB will explore local options, with former women's team captain Bismah Maroof being the top contender.
Pakistan's performance at the World Cup was indeed underwhelming. They finished at the bottom of the points table, below even Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The team lost four games and had three matches washed out due to rain in Colombo.
One of the most heartbreaking moments for Pakistan was their near-miss against England, where rain intervened and the game had to be called off. Pakistan managed to accumulate only 3 points in seven matches, all from abandoned games, and played all their matches at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
The team suffered defeats against India, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, as well as Bangladesh, Australia, and South Africa.
So, while Wahab Riaz's interest in coaching the women's team is a potential ray of hope, the PCB's exploration of other options adds an element of uncertainty. Will Riaz get the chance to turn things around? Or will the PCB's alternative plans bear fruit? Only time will tell.
What are your thoughts on this situation? Do you think Riaz could be the right choice to revive Pakistan's women's cricket? Or should the PCB stick to their original plan? Let's discuss in the comments!
